AI in Motion Design: Erasmus+ Workshop Shapes Future Creative Minds

“Motion Design with Artificial Intelligence,” a landmark event in Coimbra, Portugal, was not only a convergence of technology and creativity but also a proud part of the Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility program. Held in the vibrant and historic city, this workshop was a collaborative venture between Aydin Adnan Menderes University and  Politechnico de Coimbra, Escola Superior de Educação. I was honored to have the esteemed Pedro K. Bandeira Maia as our partner in this endeavor, whose knowledge and experience with his students added immense value to our workshop.

Over an intensive two-day period, encompassing 8 hours of immersive learning, we engaged with 26 aspiring students. These students, who were embarking on their journey into the realm of design, experienced their initial encounter with Generative AI tools in our workshop. It was designed to be an interactive and hands-on exploration, allowing students to delve into the rapidly evolving world of AI and its applications in design.

Our attendees ventured into creating their own unique narratives, a foundational step in any design process. They developed comprehensive mood boards, which served as a visual lexicon for their ensuing projects. Character design was a central focus, with students leveraging AI tools to imbue their creations with distinctive traits and depth. The culmination of their efforts was evident in the creation of simple yet engaging animations, demonstrating their newfound ability to transform abstract ideas into dynamic visual stories.

The workshop’s most striking feature was the students’ enthusiasm and adaptability as they navigated the multifaceted capabilities of AI tools. Their discovery of AI’s potential to augment creativity and streamline the design process was a revelation. The agility with which they translated concepts into visual realities underscored the transformative role of AI in design and creative expression.

This workshop in Coimbra was not just an educational initiative; it was a forward-looking endeavor that opened new horizons in design and animation. By integrating cutting-edge AI tools into their learning, we equipped our students with innovative skills and broadened their creative perspectives.
